Novell SA announces SUSE Linux OEM programme for local PC brands

South Africa has announced the launch of an OEM programme for its SUSE Linux desktop operating system, which will see increased freedom of choice being afforded to PC buyers and a likely drop in local PC price.

“We see ourselves as leading the trend in the desktop Linux space with this initiative, since we are the first region in Novell’s operation worldwide to drive desktop Linux adoption through an OEM channel,” says Stafford Masie, MD of Novell SA. “We believe that consumers can derive huge benefits from the availability of Linux in the mass market and this initiative will ensure that for the first time the Linux platform is easily within the reach of the public.”

Novell: OpenSuse tools coming soon

Novell plans to release tools early this year to let outside programmers help with its OpenSuse version of Linux, the company said Thursday.

The company announced the OpenSuse project in August as a way to draw more attention and involvement to its Linux products. The move closely parallels the way Red Hat, the top Linux seller, has created its Fedora version of Linux.

COCC crows about Oracle on SUSE

COCC is a technology cooperative based in Connecticut that develops and supports software and systems for community banks and credit unions. Each month, COCC services 7,000 workstations and 500 ATMs, and processes more than seven million check images. The software that provides reporting, databases, and financial information used to run on the AIX platform, but COCC made the switch to Linux and saved 40% on hardware costs alone.

Brent Biernet, the assistant vice president of network services at COCC, says it was the reassuring presence of a big company like Novell that convinced him to make the switch to SUSE Linux. “Before, it was hard to consider Linux, even though it is so cost-effective.” Biernet had limited experience with Linux in the enterprise, using it for spam filtering and other non-mission critical applications.

Novell Secures Major Enterprise Linux Agreement With Swiss Government

Novell (Nasdaq: NOVL) today announced a breakthrough agreement with the Swiss Federal Government that will see the introduction of Novell’s enterprise Linux* technology across Switzerland’s public sector IT infrastructure. Novell was selected following a formal tender process during which the company conclusively demonstrated it can provide the strongest Linux solution for public sector environments. As a result, more than 3,000 servers operated by the Swiss Federal Government will now run on Novell’s SUSE(R) Linux platform.
