Cyber sleuths using open source to track criminals

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

The Cybercrime Unit of the South African Police Services is increasingly using open source software in its pursuit of online and computer-using criminals. Speaking at the ForgeAhead eSecurity conference yesterday Beaunard Grobler, commander of the cybercrime unit, said the unit was increasingly using open source software in its work rooting out coriminals. “We use, for example, a Knoppix Live CD configured with special tools to find and isolate child pornography. Grobler — whose presentation was peppered with images of penguins in various detective-like poses — said the cybecrime unit, used a range of data analysis tools in their work and are “having a lot of success with open source tools. We have the best of both worlds in our environment,” said Grobler.
