Linux/Unix Vulnerabilities Outnumber Microsoft Windows’ 3 To 1

Tallies kept by the U.S. government’s computer security group show that Linux and Unix operating systems faced nearly three times the number of vulnerabilities in 2005 than did Microsoft’s often-maligned Windows.

In the US-CERT (United Stated Computer Emergency Readiness Team) year-end vulnerability summary, Linux/Unix accounted for a whopping 2,328 vulnerabilities, about 45 percent of the 5,198 total.

Windows, on the other hand, sported just 812 vulnerabilities during the year, said US-CERT, or 16 percent of the total.

OSDL breaks silence on secret meetings with MS

Microsoft approached the Open Source Development Lab about conducting a jointly-funded research study that would purportedly produce some facts-based analysis and comparisons of the two operating systems. Both Microsoft and the OSDL have been pretty tight-lipped about the discussions held during a LinuxWorld meeting between Microsoft’s general manager of platform strategy, Martin Taylor, and the OSDL’s CEO Stuart Cohen. However, late last week the OSDL forwarded us a statement from Cohen that explains some of the silence.

Microsoft to support Linux with Virtual Server

The next release of Microsoft’s Virtual Server product will support the virtualization of both Linux and Sun Microsystems Inc.’s Solaris operating systems on servers running the Microsoft Windows operating system (OS), a company spokesman said in an interview Wednesday.

Microsoft on Wednesday also announced a new name for the next interim release of the product, formerly called Virtual Server 2005 Service Pack 1. Microsoft is now calling it Virtual Server 2005 R2, news unveiled by Microsoft in a keynote by Pat Gelsinger, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s (Profile, Products, Articles) Digital Enterprise Group, at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco.

Novell links Linux platform into Microsoft apps

Novell Inc. has announced what it is dubbing as the first cross-platform systems management suite that allows businesses to manage their Windows workstations from a Linux platform.

Available later this week, Novell Zenworks 7 Suite automates lifecycle management across desktops, laptops, servers and handheld devices, reducing management costs and improving security across the organization, according to the Waltham, Mass.-based organization.

“It doesn’t mean we’re abandoning everything we’ve done before,” said Ross Chevalier, chief technology officer at Novell Canada. “We’re simply extending it out to provide very comprehensive management both through Linux servers and Linux workstations.”
