China’s Red Flag Software Sees Strong Growth This Year

The near-monopoly status of Microsoft’s Windows operating system left Chinese companies with little room to bargain with the U.S. software giant, Red Flag CEO Chris Zhao said, which has driven increasing numbers of customers towards open-source operating systems, such as those made by Red Flag.

China’s Red Flag Software, which develops Linux-based operating system software , is expecting to see strong profit growth this year, the company’s chief executive, Chris Zhao, told XFN-Asia.

“I’m quite convinced this year we will achieve many times the profit compared with last year,” he said in an interview.

He declined to give a specific forecast but said that last year Red Flag booked a profit of about one million yuan (US$123,523) — the company’s first full year profit — four years after the company’s founding.

Red Flag’s Linux desktop now includes Opera browser

Top Chinese Linux maker Red Flag has added Opera to its latest desktop operating system. Red Flag Desktop will ship with the award-winning Opera browser, which is widely hailed for being faster, smaller, and more standards-compliant than other Internet browsers. Opera also includes an email client and IRC-compatible chat.

Red Hat opens office in China

The company said it will work with industry partners such as Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Intel and Oracle, as well as with Chinese business partners, to serve the rapidly growing Chinese software market. Red Hat’s office will be located in the nation’s capital, Beijing.

The Chinese business partners are likely to include Red Flag, a government-backed Linux provider, although a Red Hat representative was unable to immediately confirm that information.

RealNetworks signs up Red Flag Linux

RealNetworks has signed up a new Linux partner to distribute its audio and video player, China-based Red Flag Linux, the company announced Wednesday during the LinuxWorld conference in London. The top two Linux sellers, Red Hat and Novell, signed distribution deals with RealNetworks earlier this year. The company also has partnerships with Turbolinux and Sun Microsystems.
