Ubuntu 5.04 and nVidia FX5200

Monday, May 9th, 2005

Over the weekend, I installed Ubuntu 5.04 on a spare workstation I had around the house… For the most part everything went very well, but I did run into one little snafu, and I’m here asking my readership for some help…

The machine I installed it on is a Dual Proc P3 1Ghz (Abit VP6 Mobo) with an AGP Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 video card. For the life of me, I can’t get the resolution higher than 640×480. I did the xorg autoconfig thingy, it walked me through and autodetected everything perfectly, including my monitor. No matter what resolution I set it to manually, it goes straight to 640×480 when it boots up. In fact, in Gnome, under the monitor resolution widget, it won’t let me change the resolution at all. I’ve had tons of other Linux Distros on this machine configured exactly how it is now, with no problems at all… is there something I’m missing? Does anybody want to chime in?

Using an iPod with SUSE Linux 9.2

Friday, December 3rd, 2004

I’m an unabashed iPod lover. People thought I was a little nuts in 2001 when I bought the original 5GB iPod. Why do you need to have all that music in that little box? In 2003, I bought a 30GB iPod, that has treated me quite well. Well, except for the fact that I could never get it to work under Linux (something about the partitioning?).

I’m happy to say that the iPod works *VERY* well under SUSE Linux 9.2, and I would imagine FC3 should have similar luck as well. Here’s the quick and easy guide on how to do it, using gtkpod (google cache).

Installing Ardour.

The version of Ardour that comes with SuSE is fairly out of date. So, to get the latest installed from CVS, just follow these steps.

Realtime Audio on SuSE Linux 9.2 HOWTO

Thursday, December 2nd, 2004

So far, SuSE 9.2 has gone fairly smoothly. I now have my winmodem working after a YOU update, all that’s left now is wireless (leave until later) and realtime audio. So here is the instructions for getting realtime audio to work under SuSE Linux 9.2.

Since SuSE Linux 9.2 uses the 2.6 version of the Linux kernel, you need to install the realtime-lsm module into the kernel for realtime priviledges as a normal user.
