HP Signs Red Hat, Novell For Linux Expansion

Hewlett-Packard (Quote, Chart) is putting its money and some of its internal resources where its mouth is: behind Linux.

Linux distributors Red Hat and Novell have signed unrestricted use agreements with HP that allow the tech giant to widely deploy Linux within its organization.

Financial terms of the two deals were not disclosed. Efrain Rovira, worldwide director of marketing for HP’s open source and Linux organization, told internetnews.com the value “is important for both of them.”

Novell’s Next Linux Server, Desktop In The Pipeline

Novell released details of its next-generation Suse enterprise Linux server, dubbed Code 10, and Novell Linux Desktop 10 at BrainShare.

Novell gave attendees of BrainShare a sneak peek at the next major upgrade of Suse Linux Enterprise Server, dubbed Code 10.

SLES 10, which is expected to move into beta testing in August and ship in early 2006, will incorporate commercially supported Xen virtualization, consolidated software management, a Common Information Model (CIM) systems management API and flexible add-on capabilities to allow ISVs and service partners to hook in products and services, Novell product managers said during a BrainShare briefing on Tuesday.

Novell announces small-business Linux bundle

Novell has packaged several Linux-based products into a suite geared for small business, Chief Executive Jack Messman said Monday.

The package includes Suse Linux Enterprise Server, or SLES, for up to three servers; Novell Linux Desktop for personal computers; GroupWise server software for managing e-mail, contacts and calendars; and eDirectory for managing computers.

The software will be available March 31 at a cost of $475 per five computer users, up to 100. The server software may be used on up to three servers, Novell said. Messman announced the software at the company’s annual Brainshare conference in Salt Lake City.

Novell grows Linux sales

Novell has sold 21,000 subscriptions for its SUSE Linux Enterprise Server during the first quarter ended 31 January, as the company attempts to move beyond traditional NetWare products to open source.

“We still have work ahead of us as we continue to reposition the company in our growth markets,” said Jack Messman, Novell chief executive officer.
